Hunter Hensley was involved in all three touchdowns for West Point as the Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak with a Class 5A, Region 8 road win (21-7) at Lawrence County.

Lawrence County (2-5, 0-4) returned the opening kick for a touchdown, but after that the Warriors took control – first with defense.

“We were pretty disciplined,” West Point coach Don Farley said. “We didn’t have a facemask penalty or pass interference calls. … Overall, we played very disciplined.”

Hensley threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Parker Marks early to tie the game at 7, but West Point didn’t go ahead until there was 9:38 left in the game. Hensley found Eli Sims for a 50-yard score.

“We tell our guys, ‘Don’t get comfortable,’” Farley said. “We didn’t get comfortable, but we felt like we were shifting the pressure over to them.”

Hensley added a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:54 left to seal the win.

“Hunter just keeps getting better every game,” Farley said, noting he handled some new offensive strategy well. “We kind of threw some things at him this week. … I was real proud of him.”

Farley also credited running back/linebacker Garit Roberson for strong play throughout the night and said the receivers and offensive line performed well, too.

It was West Point’s first region win since a victory over Sardis on Oct. 8 last year.

“They were definitely excited,” Farley said of his players. “It’s been a great day and God is good.”

Fairview 42, Ardmore 12

Eli Frost ran for first-quarter touchdowns of 45, 10 and approximately 70 yards and added two more scores by the end of the night as Fairview cruised past Ardmore to stay unbeaten against Class 5A, Region 8 competition.

Barett York added a 25-yard run in the second quarter for Fairview (5-1, 3-0), which knocked Ardmore (3-3, 2-1) out of a first-place tie in the standings. Frost’s second-half touchdown runs went for 37 and 15 yards.

Fairview’s Isaac Elrod and Jameson Goble each blocked an Ardmore extra point.

Since a 54-47 loss to Priceville in their second game of the year, the Aggies have outscored opponents 161-39. Fairview hosts Brewer next week.

Meek 44, Addison 24

Addison pulled off a clever trick play just before halftime, but it wasn’t enough in a first-place Class 1A, Region 8 showdown with Meek.

The Tigers (6-0, 4-0) scored a touchdown in the first quarter and another to open the second and never trailed Addison (5-2, 4-1). Meek snapped a 13-game losing streak in the series.

With less than a minute left before halftime, Addison’s Malachi Blakley tossed to Jed Wilkins, and Wilkins threw a 30-yard TD pass to Briley Hayes. The conversion try failed, so Addison trailed 20-12.

Hayes threw 65-yard and 60-yard touchdowns to Wilkins, and Addison’s Briley Holt scored on a 1-yard run.

Addison is off next week.

Gaston 28, Holly Pond 26

Sawyer Olinger and Kollin Brown connected on a touchdown pass with just under five minutes to go, giving Holly Pond a chance with the deficit cut to two, but the Broncos couldn’t break through for an elusive first win.

Gaston’s two second-half touchdowns – one in the third quarter and one early in the fourth – made the difference in the Class 2A, Region 6 matchup.

Gaston is 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the region.

Damian Raymond put Holly Pond (0-7, 0-4) ahead 7-0 about a minute into the game, and Diego Garcia stretched the lead to 13-6 with a touchdown run at the start of the second quarter.

Jayden Holloway’s touchdown run of approximately 60 yards put the Broncos ahead 19-14 with 7:50 until halftime, but they didn’t score again until Olinger found Brown in the fourth.

Holly Pond will travel to West End next week and try to snap an 11-game losing streak.

Winston County 24, Cold Springs 0

Three different Winston County players scored first-half touchdowns to help the Yellow Jackets take down Cold Springs in a Class 2A, Region 5 game.

The only loss so far this year for Winston County (5-1, 2-1) is to Sulligent by four points.

Cold Springs (3-4, 0-3) will travel to Aliceville next week for its third straight road game.

J.B. Pennington 41, Vinemont 6

J.B Pennington scored three touchdowns in the first five minutes and added three more scores before halftime en route to beating Vinemont and improving to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Class 3A, Region 7.

Vinemont sophomore Rush Sandlin’s 4-yard touchdown moments into the second quarter cut the margin to 21-6 and prevented a shutout. Neither team scored in the second half.

Vinemont (2-4, 1-2) hosts Madison Academy next week.
