West Point defeated Brewer 11-8 on Thursday to win the Class 5A, Area 14 Tournament title.

The Lady Warriors eliminated Arab 13-3 earlier in the day before besting the Lady Patriots 11-1 to force a winner-take-all championship game.

West Point pounded out 37 hits overall and improved to 22-17-1 this season.

“I’m amazed at the grit and fight this team has,” coach Eric Pendley said. “After being at the field for seven hours and losing the lead in the sixth, it would have been easy to quit and feel sorry for themselves. This team will fight you to the end. These ladies will do big things in life.”

The Lady Warriors led 7-2 after five innings, but Brewer plated six runs in the top half of the sixth frame to seize an 8-7 advantage.

West Point, however, wasn’t to be denied.

Sydney Sellers tied things up in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double before Gracie Abbott put her team in front for good with a two-run double shortly afterward. Carlie Wilkins then tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single and closed the door on the Lady Patriots in the seventh inning.

Molly Pendley had four hits for the Maroon and White, while Abbott (three hits and two RBIs), Wilkins (two hits and four RBIs) and Sellers (two hits and three RBIs) provided terrific offensive performances.

Braelee Quinn added a solo homer, Gracie Thompson had a hit, and Makayla Brown drew five walks.

Abbott, Brown, Pendley, Shadix and Wilkins were named to the All-Area team.

The Lady Warriors advance to the North Regional Tournament in Florence.
