PREP FISHING: West Point wins 2nd straight team title at Classic; Galbreath, Shedd notch top-boat honors

West Point’s fishing team dominated at Smith Lake on Thursday, securing the team title at the Cullman, Alabama High School Classic for a second consecutive year.

Caiden Galbreath and Ashlyn Shedd took home top-boat honors after notching 15.58 pounds. The duo caught the biggest bass of the fifth annual tournament as well at 6.21 pounds.

The Warriors also recorded solid efforts from Walker Johnson and Weston Montgomery (14.36 pounds) and Clent Blackwood and Hunter Clay (10.36 pounds), who finished second and 11th, respectively.

West Point registered a three-boat total of 40.25 pounds to claim the overall prize.

Good Hope (33.92) was second followed by Cullman (32.61), Fairview (31.95), Vinemont (29.18), Holly Pond (24.88), Cold Springs (24.35) and Hanceville (21.62).

Prior to their eventual victory, both Galbreath and Shedd had to wait a long time in the hot box.

And it did little to settle their stomachs.

“Just sitting there is pretty nerve-wracking,” Galbreath said. “Because you never know what’s going to come in. Once weigh-ins closed, though, it was a lot of relief.”

Added Shedd: “I have to agree with him. Sitting there, you shake pretty bad. Every bag that comes up, you’re like, ‘That one’s going to beat me.'”

In the end, however, their weight was simply too great.

“We found them (fish) everywhere,” Galbreath said. “It’s exciting. This is a team event by all means. We all work together.”
