In what seems like the blink of an eye, we’ve reached the halfway mark of the prep football season.

And what a stretch it’s been thus far.

Various local teams and players have turned in terrific performances over the past five weeks, and perhaps more importantly, the playoff picture has begun to take shape.

So, what better time than Week 6 to take a step back and breathe with a few non-region contests?

Before we get to it, though, remember to please visit www.cullmantimes.com, The Cullman Times Facebook or my Twitter account (@winfreyjake) for prep football coverage.

Addison (3-2, 2-1) at Good Hope (4-0, 3-0)

These perennial contenders have met each of the last four seasons — with the past three matchups having been decided by a combined 12 points.

The Bulldogs have won two straight in the series, but the Raiders enter Friday touting the top-ranked defense in 4A.

Regardless of what happens here, both programs are in good shape as it pertains to the postseason.

But I expect a low-scoring win for the home team.

My Pick: Good Hope

Lynn (4-1, 3-0) at Cold Springs (3-2, 1-1)

For the second straight week, the Eagles are set to face a tough non-region opponent.

The Bears have pitched two consecutive shutouts — Pickens County and Sumiton Christian — and look like a Class 1A, Region 5 contender.

While I think Cold Springs likely closes out the season strong, it might not start here.

My Pick: Lynn

Brewer (1-3, 0-2) at Cullman (2-3, 1-2)

Here’s a quick history lesson that all but makes this pick for me.

The Bearcats are 25-1 all-time against the Patriots, according to AHSFHS.org.

Not much else to say here.

My Pick: Cullman

Vinemont (4-1, 2-1) at West End (0-5, 0-3)

Like Kramer at Brandt-Leland, the Eagles have been steadily taking care of business.

I don’t think that changes Friday night.

West End has struggled to score points so far this season — and that’s bad news against a Vinemont defense that’s been solid for a good chunk of its games.

The road team should avenge a 1995 loss to the Patriots.

My Pick: Vinemont

West Point (0-4, 0-2) at Hayden (1-4, 0-2)

The Warriors return from a bye week with a great chance to pick up their first win.

Both teams have had trouble putting points on the scoreboard, so this could be a low-scoring affair.

It might also be close — as the previous four meetings have been decided by 13 points or fewer.

Give me the (not Hawk and Animal) Road Warriors.

My Pick: West Point

Season Record: 31-7
