Preston Gay scored a pair of touchdowns and Cullman overcame a 13-point, second-half deficit at Jasper on Friday night to pick up a 21-20 victory in Class 6A, Region 7 play.
“It was a crazy night — power went out, pouring down rain,” Cullman coach Danny Stiff said. “To find a way to win under all those circumstances shows a lot about the resiliency and confidence our team has. It’s not easy to win with all that, especially being down a couple of scores. I’m proud of them.”
Cooper Loftin recorded a first-half touchdown, but the Bearcats trailed 12-7 at the break.
Jasper added a score midway through the third quarter to push its lead to 20-7, but the road team began its comeback in due time.
Gay found the end zone on a quarterback sneak with 8:53 remaining before scoring from 20 yards out with 59 seconds to go. A 2-point pass to Asher Drake moments later put Cullman in front and all the pressure back on the Vikings.
“I had decided to go for two as soon as we scored to make it 20-13, just because I felt like with the weather and having the momentum if we scored again that we’d get that play we wanted ready and we’d try to win the game on that,” Stiff said. “I knew we had a good 2-point play.”
Although the home team drove the field late, a missed field goal secured the win for the Bearcats.
Cullman (2-2, 1-1) travels to Muscle Shoals next week.
