Josh Rhodes and Chad Reynolds each had a rushing touchdown and 2-point conversion, Vinemont’s defense played stellar throughout the game and the Eagles held off Falkville 16-14 on Friday night to record a victory in their home and season opener. 

Rhodes’ score helped Vinemont take an 8-6 lead into halftime. Reynolds, meanwhile, put the Eagles in front 16-6 with his touchdown early in the fourth quarter. 

Falkville housed the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it interesting down the stretch, but the home squad made enough plays to hold on for another close win in the series — the past five games have now been decided by a combined 29 points. 

“It was a typical Falkville game, but I felt like our conditioning and practice habits paid off in the end,” Vinemont coach Stephen Robinson said. “We have got some mental mistakes to fix that put us in bad situations — left some points on the field and gave up some points because of that. 

“But I am super happy with the fight and determination and the battling through all the adversity that comes with football in August. The defense got some stops and the offensive line took over the game.” 

The Eagles travel to Southeastern next week.

Winston County 48, Addison 13

The Bulldogs dropped their season opener to the Yellow Jackets on Friday night — their fourth straight loss in the series. 

Seth Hammack’s short touchdown run tied the game at 7 midway through the first quarter, but Winston County took control from there.

Zayne Smith found the end zone just before the end of the contest to account for the road team’s final score. 

Addison will look to bounce back next week in its home opener against Decatur Heritage.

Appalachian 28, Holly Pond 18

The Broncos trailed by just three points with less than five minutes remaining, but the Eagles added a late touchdown to put away the road win on Friday night. 

Sawyer Olinger threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brody Howard in the loss. The senior quarterback also added a scoring run (7 yards) — as did Boston Gibbs (15 yards). 

Holly Pond hosts Hanceville next week.

Haleyville 27, West Point 24

The Warriors dropped a heartbreaker in Kevin McCravy’s head coaching debut on Friday night. 

The teams traded blows throughout the game, but the visitors grabbed a late lead and held on for the victory.

West Point’s Hunter Hensley accounted for three total touchdowns — two on the ground and one through the air to Bryant Moon. Julio Fuentes booted a field goal.

The Warriors host Good Hope next week.
