HANCEVILLE — Cold Springs piled up the rushing yards at an impressive rate on Friday night.
Matt Williams (three), Cason Alexander (two), Mason Gable (one) and Cooper Johnson (one) each found the end zone at Ray Talley Stadium to help lead a powerful ground attack — the Eagles tallied more than 500 yards — in a 48-30 road victory against Hanceville.
“We came over here with the mindset of coming off the football,” Cold Springs coach Brendan Voce said. “We knew they were going to be tough, but our goal was to wear them down. The offensive line did a great job of that.”
Williams registered a pair of touchdowns in the first half as Cold Springs led 14-12 at the break.
He then ripped off an 80-yard score following a fourth-down stop by the Blue and Gold defense to make it 20-12 in the third quarter.
Hanceville’s Hunter Black, however, found Drake Bentley later in the frame from 15 yards out to keep the home team within striking distance.
But it was all Cold Springs after that.
The Eagles notched the next 22 points to build a comfortable cushion before Alexander turned out the lights with a 44-yard touchdown scamper on fourth down — shortly after Marquies Leeth had secured a kickoff return touchdown for the Bulldogs.
Williams finished with 25 carries for 215 yards. Alexander (11 carries, 170 yards), Tycen Kilgo (seven carries, 60 yards), Gable (seven carries, 50 yards) and Johnson (five carries, 18 yards) all produced for Cold Springs as well.
“As tough as our guys ran, we don’t run for all those yards without those big boys up front,” Voce said of the offensive linemen. “We did a great job tonight on offense.”
Black finished his night with three touchdown passes — two to Bentley and one to Ashton Hurst. Leeth added a rushing score.
Cold Springs travels to Curry on Thursday night. Hanceville, meanwhile, heads to Holly Pond on Friday.
