GOOD HOPE — Nathan Doss hit a walk-off two-run double in the nightcap and pitched a one-hit complete game in Tuesday’s opener to lead Good Hope to a pair of area series-clinching wins over J.B. Pennington.

Doss carried his weight with 12 strikeouts in a 4-1 win to kick things off, while Preston Calvert followed suit with a seven-inning gem of his own in a 4-3 victory for the Raiders.

Doss helped his cause in the first game with a hit at the plate. Austin Reid and Matt Hancock were good for a double and single, respectively.

Good Hope led 2-1 for most of the finale but gave up two runs in the top of the seventh to trail 3-2.

Reid started the comeback with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin White. Hancock earned a free pass to put runners on first and second, allowing Doss to play hero and drive both in with the double.

Calvert notched eight strikeouts with his arm and contributed a double, a single and two RBIs with his bat. Ross Bailey had a hit and set up Calvert’s two-run knock with a sacrifice.

Tuesday’s sweep more than made up for Monday’s 3-0 loss in the series opener, as well as the other slim defeats coach Mitch Witcher’s club had collected on the young season.

“Our pitchers did an excellent job,” said Witcher, whose squad improved to 3-5. “It felt good to get two close games tonight.”

‰ Cold Springs 11, Tanner 1: The Eagles rebounded from a tight loss to the Rattlers Monday with a five-inning win Tuesday.
