- Vinemont running back John Michael Dye gallops through open space during the first half of the Eagles’ 45-20 win vs. Hanceville. Dye ran for 262 yards on 12 carries and scored six touchdowns.
John Michael Dye, Levi Hammack, Kobe Smith and Brontae Harris were recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers Association for their Week 4 football feats.
The local quartet, which all appeared in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Prep Spotlight release, were included in the “other notable performances” section of the ASWA’s Player of the Week package late Monday.
Dye was masterful in Vinemont’s 45-20 home win over Hanceville, turning 12 carries into 262 yards and six scores. His touchdowns covered 60, 20, 42, 50, 4 and 62 yards. The 60-yarder was on the game’s first play from scrimmage.
Hammack continued to carry his weight on Addison’s defensive line in a 42-7 road rout of No. 8 Falkville. The junior recovered two fumbles, including one for a touchdown, and also had a pair of tackles for loss.
Smith notched his second kickoff return for a touchdown in as many weeks. With West Point leading Ardmore just 7-6 at halftime, the speedster returned the second-half kickoff 80 yards for a score and also caught a 58-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors piled on 24 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters to win 31-6.
Harris didn’t back down to the pressure of a statewide audience or to the hype of No. 6 Florence in Cullman’s region clash on Thursday-night TV. Playing in his first game at Oliver Woodard Stadium, the senior transfer returned the Bearcats’ first kickoff 96 yards to tie the Falcons, who won 28-14, in an electric opening minute. Harris also made an impact on offense late, completing 6 of 8 passes for 75 yards in place of Cullman’s ailing starter.
Baker’s Tre McMillian was picked as the ASWA’s Offensive Player of the Week. The 5-foot-6, 167-pound running back rolled up 313 yards on 14 carries in a 41-31 triumph over McGill-Toolen. McMillian reached the end zone on totes of 79, 36, 78 and 55 yards. He also caught a 38-yard screen pass for a score.
Shades Valley quarterback RaShad Louie and Woodville’s Jose Montesdeoca were the ASWA’s offensive finalists.
Louie logged 11 carries for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while also completing 20 of 34 throws for 222 yards and another three scores in a 39-21 win against Acadiana (La.).
Montesdeoca racked up 290 total yards and six touchdowns in Woodville’s 41-26 victory over Vina. He ran five times for 162 yards and three touchdowns and caught four passes for 128 yards and three scores. Montesdeoca also had a two-point conversion and kicked an extra point.
The ASWA’s Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week was Madison Academy’s Kerryon Johnson. The Auburn commit blocked a pair of punts, scored on a 47-yard run off a fake punt and recovered a fumble in a 57-7 blowout of Sheffield.
Johnson beat Opelika’s Roy Yancey and Escambia Academy’s Tim Finklea for the honor.
Yancey had 21 tackles, including two sacks, and two fumble recoveries in a 53-0 win versus Pell City. Finklea had kickoff returns of 94 and 78 yards for touchdowns in a victory over Fort Dale Academy.
