City OKs alcohol license for new Wal-Mart

- City approves alcohol license for new Walmart
The Cullman City Council approved an off-premises alcohol license Monday for the new Wal-Mart set to open November 11 on Alabama 157.
The license will allow the store to sell beer and wine and was unanimously approved with the recommendation from the city’s alcohol review committee.

The new store will mark the county’s second Wal-Mart, with the existing location on Olive Street in south Cullman. The total Wal-Mart building area will be 189,543 square feet in size, with an outdoor garden center of 3,759 feet.
Along with the main Wal-Mart store and large parking lot, the development includes four smaller retail spaces, with spots ranging from 20,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet. The site plan also includes a handful of additional undeveloped outparcels around the project.
In other business Monday, the Cullman City Council:
* Approved minutes from September 28 and October 1 meetings.
* Approved Sanitation Superintendent Larry Jones’ $6,200 request to purchase garage doors for lawnmower shed from Wayne Overhead Door.
* Approved IT Director Daniel Hunt’s $12,364 request to purchase required storage and memory expansions for the server hardware from Teklinks, Inc.

* Approved Hunt’s request to purchase desktop computers for various departments from Dell on state bid contract, with the cost not to exceed $21,000.
* Approved Hunt’s request to purchase Microsoft Office for the new desktop computers from Software House International on state bid contract, with the cost not to exceed $6,000.
* Approved Water Superintendent Chris Freeman’s $181,703 request to purchase two John Deere backhoes from Warrior Tractor & Equipment Company, Inc. on the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) bid list.
* Approved Freeman’s $166,541 request to purchase rubber-tired loader from Warrior Tractor & Equipment Company, Inc. on the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) bid list.
* Approved Parks and Recreation Marketing Director Waid Harbison’s request for a special event permit to hold the Monster Dash SK Run at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 24 beside the Cullman Wellness and Aquatics Center.
* Approved Brandon Oliver of Conviction Entertainment, LLC’s request for a special event permit to hold a filming session October 25 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the sidewalks and alleys of First Street Southeast, Second Avenue Southeast, Fourth Street Southeast and Fifth Street Southeast. The company will be filming a short Christian film.
* Approved Jacob Johnston of Louisiana Pacific’s request for a special event permit to hold the Family Fun and Company Picnic I-5 p.m. Sunday, October 25 in Depot Park and Festhalle, pending scheduling.
* Approved Rebekah Mickle of First Baptist Church’s request for a special event permit to hold a Trunk or Treat 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 28 at First Baptist Church.
* Approved Nathaniel Hutchinson of Cullman Moose Lodge’s request for a special event permit to hold Turkey Shoots 8 a.m.- I p.m. Wednesday, October 28 through December 19, each Saturday, at the Cullman Moose Lodge.
* Held second reading of ordinance and approved participating in annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday beginning 12:01 a.m. February 26, 2016 and ending at midnight February 28.
* Approved $2,500 contract for professional services with the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce for fiscal year 2016.
* Approved entering into contract for professional services with Air Evac insurance coverage for employees. The city’s cost will be $40 per month for single coverage and $45 per month for family coverage.
* Set a public hearing for November 9 regarding ordinance to vacate and declare surplus a portion of Sixth Avenue from Fourth Street to Third Street that is no longer needed for public or municipal purposes.
* Approved resolution sending a letter of support for October as Dyslexia Month.
The Cullman City Council will hold its next meeting 7 p.m. October 26.
