The city of Fultondale is planning to honor heroes living and deceased for the eleventh anniversary of 9-11.

Last month, the city installed a flagpole at the Promenade Shopping Center off of Interstate 65. The flagpole will fly a 15-by-25-foot American flag.

Officials will raise the flag on Tuesday during a 9-11 memorial ceremony.

Mayor Jim Lowery said the city has invited several dignitaries, including the commanders of the American Legion Posts in Fultondale, Tarrant and East Lake; the state American Legion commander; the North Jefferson VFW commander; a first responder from New York who now lives in Alabama; and others.

The Fultondale High School and is also scheduled to perform.

“After 9-11, there was a spirit in our country that seems to be dying out again,” Lowery said. “I served in Vietnam, and I never saw a spirit like that even among those I served with.”

Lowery said the ceremony will memorialize the victims of all three terrorist attacks, including the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the plane that went down in Shanksville, Pa.

“This is in memory of those that lost their lives, their loved ones and first responders,” Lowery said.

The public is invited to attend the event. Chairs will be set up in the empty lot near Ashley Furniture, overlooking the flag.
