Nelle Holley Bruce, 99, of Gardendale, departed her earthly bonds to rest in eternal peace with her Lord and Savior on Jan. 10, 2008. She was a 54 year member of Gardendale First Baptist Church and active in many ministries of the church, including homebound for many years. She enjoyed senior activities and field trips. She taught young women’s classes and was a teacher/charter member of the Welcome Class. She was a genuine Christian and touched many lives. She was a lover of birds and flowers. Wild flowers were her specialty. Being a charter member of the Blue Star Garden Club afforded her the opportunity to participate in God’s beautiful world. She helped develop the club theme of “Knowing, growing and showing – in God’s beautiful world.” She will be missed by many and will be remembered by all for the life lessons she taught by the life she lived. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.D. Bruce; parents, Will and Annie Holley; brothers, Maxwell Holley and John Holley Sr.; sister, Madge Smith; and nephews, Randy Smith and John Holley, Jr. Those living to cherish her memory are sisters, Billie Phipps and Wanda Johnson of Sarasota, Fla.; nephews, Scott Phipps of Oakland, Calif., David (Marsha) Phipps of Parrish, Fla., and Tom Bruce (Jackie) of Aiken, S.C.; and niece, Tanya Holley of Queensboro, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Gardendale First Baptist Church Camp David Fund, Gardendale First Baptist Church Missions Fund, Gardendale First Baptist Church Building Fund or a ministry of your choice. Services were held at Gardendale First Baptist Church Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. with visitation at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel, Friday, Jan. 11, 2008.
