A Veterans Day program, ‘Honor and Glory,’ will be presented Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11 at the McGukin Civic Center from 3 to 5 p.m.

“We held this event at Destiny Church the past two years, but needed more space this year,” said Bonnie Sachs, program director.

Sachs, who teaches 4th grade at Addison Elementary, started the event after she and her husband witnessed the second airplane hit the Twin Towers in New York on September 11.

“It was very traumatic, and made me realize so many things. Later, after the war started, I thought it would be nice to have an annual program honoring veterans. I also want children to realize that we need our military, and learn how to show respect and appreciation for our veterans.”

The event is free to the public. Veterans, their families and friends are encouraged to attend. “There will be several different venues on the program and one is to introduce and honor six local mothers who have lost their sons in our current war,” said Sachs. “They are our ‘Golden Star Mothers.’”

Key note speaker will be Judge Roy Moore. Best known his Ten Commandments stand, Moore is also a Vietnam veteran.

Other speakers will include local and regional representatives. Along with patriotic music and singers, a surprise event is planned and promises to be new and entertaining, according to Sachs.

“I think this is a good opportunity to honor our veterans and remind those who have served that they shouldn’t forget what they did,” said World War II decorated veteran George Mann. “They will always be heroes and our community pays tribute to them in events like this.”

“The program, ‘Honor and Glory’ is very dear to my heart, and I put a lot of effort into it because I know how important our military veterans are to our country,” said Sachs.

Other Veterans Day events include a veteran’s ceremony at the Cullman County Courthouse on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m., with two names of fallen veterans to be engraved on the monument. Veteran’s Park in Hanceville will host veteran’s appreciation at 11 a.m. on the same day.
