Yogurt Mountain, a Birmingham-based chain of more than 40 frozen yogurt stores mainly across the Southeast, has announced it will open a new location in Gardendale next to the soon-to-open Panera Bread.

Another tenant in a new retail development in Gardendale has been announced.

Yogurt Mountain, a chain of frozen yogurt stores based in Birmingham, has announced that it will open a location in the new development being built on Fieldstown Road.

The move was announced by the chain Thursday.

No definite opening date has been set for the store, but the chain is aiming for a date in March.

“It depends on when we get the building turned over to us,” said Julie Wade, vice president of products and marketing for Yogurt Mountain.

The new store will open next to the previously announced location of Panera Bread, at the corner of Fieldstown Road and Mt. Olive Road. The space was occupied for many years by Shoney’s restaurant, which was closed and demolished late last year.

Yogurt Mountain features a rotating lineup of 16 flavors of frozen yogurt, to which customers can add a wide array of fruit and vandy toppings. Servings are sold by weight. The chain is one of several which sprang up across the country over the last few years with serving frozen yogurt with similar concepts.

“YoMo” operates in 14 states, with 42 locations currently open. The first store was opened in 2009 in Cahaba Village on U.S. 280. The Gardendale store will be the fourth stand-alone location for the chain; it also operates a store inside a Books-A-Million in Alabaster.
