The 80th Strawberry Festival, backed by blue skies and headline entertainment, drew more than 20,000 people Saturday.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band concert in the evening had 5,000 alone to close the festival, said Nathan Anderson, director of Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism.

He said the attendance was the largest in the modern era of the festival, which began in 1939.

“We feel we had a great lineup of artists and crafts people along with the music. And there were plenty of strawberries, which is always one of the top demands,” Anderson said. “I want to thank all the volunteers, staff, parks board and the mayor for they work they did day and night.”
