BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Police in Alabama say a masked gunman who opened fire at a McDonald’s restaurant was fatally shot by a customer leaving with his two sons.

Birmingham police Sgt. Bryan Shelton told local news outlets the armed customer and one of his juvenile sons were wounded in the shootout late Saturday. He said the gunman died after being taken to a hospital.

Police said the father and his sons were leaving the restaurant as the manager was closing for the night when the masked man burst inside and started shooting.

Police did not immediately identify the slain gunman or the customer who shot him.

McDonald’s employee Markus Washington told WBRC-TV he heard more than 15 shots fired as he hid inside a freezer.
