Tammy Brown won 56 percent of the vote Tuesday to return for another six-year term as probate judge.

Brown, who had worked in the office for more than 20 years before winning her first term, turned back challenger Carol Berry. Brown won 8,889 votes to Berry’s 6,810.

Both candidates campaigned about issues the office and community are facing in mental health care. Brown ran on her experience and knowledge of the various roles the probate office fulfills in the community.

Berry, who has been involved in successful community outreach programs, brought a strong financial background to the race.

“I count myself as a public servant,” Brown said. “I’m here to serve people. I think the voters looked at the experience and accountability I’ve given in the term I’ve been in office.”

Brown said she would continue to be involved in raising awareness about the mental health issues facing Cullman County.

“I think this election showed how much the probate offices handles each day,” Brown said. “The mental health cases are part of the job, but there are so many other aspects we have to balance each day.”

Berry said she was thankful for the experience of campaigning and meeting people across the county.

“The people I’ve met all over and the friends I’ve made in this campaign are worth every moment of running,” Berry said. “We have so many good people who are engaged and care about Cullman County. I hope people do not let the mental health issue go. We have to continue to bring this to the forefront.”
