A 2-year-old child and an adult were injured today when a family pet reportedly attacked the child at a residence on 7th Street Southwest in Cullman.

The child is en route to Cullman Regional for treatment, while the adult is being flown to a separate hospital after one of his arteries was damaged in the attack, Cullman Police Chief Kenny Culpepper said.

“The dog was a bulldog mix, but a family member shot and killed it after it attacked. The child was attacked first and apparently the child’s grandfather intervened and had an artery in his arm damaged,” Culpepper said. “We know that someone in the family shot and killed the dog.”

A medical helicopter landed at Heritage Park to transport the grandfather. Culpepper said the child’s injuries did not appear to be as serious and was transported by ambulance to Cullman Regional.

The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. No other details are available.
