Planet Fitness is planning to open a location in the old Kmart building as it undergoes renovations to become a new retail center, The Shops at Cullman.

On Monday, the Cullman Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for Planet Fitness to occupy the center portion, totaling 26,600 square feet, leaving two other retail units on each end.

For the past month, Nearen Construction has been remodeling the sprawling property into three separate commercial units, according to city building departments records. It’s not clear what will join Planet Fitness in the new center.

Kmart, owned by Sears Holding Corp., closed its Cullman location in December 2016 following a liquidation sale. It was among nearly 80 Kmart stores shuttered, including locations in Birmingham, Decatur, Homewood, Mobile and Oxford.
