A will to live

Family and friends are raising money for a Crane Hill man who has miraculously survived a horrific wreck Friday morning that flung him from his truck and caused a rare medical condition — internal decapitation.
Heath Baker, 30, remains in UAB Hospital, somehow making remarkable progress despite breaking 13 ribs, his pelvis and a hip joint, fracturing his spine, rupturing spleen and collapsing a lung. The internal decapitation — where the skull is severed from the spinal column without breaking the skin — alone should have killed him.
Seventy percent of people die immediately from the injury, 15 percent don’t make it out of the emergency room and even less survive the hospital stay to go home. While it’s still very early in Baker’s recovery, his will to live seems apparent.
The Pray4Heath Facebook page where family post updates on his recovery shows a video of Baker lifting his right arm off the bed despite the sedation medication.
“We were told not to expect him to make it out alive. Not only is he still alive at this time, he can move all limbs. God is great!” said Kindra Barnett who set up a GoFundMe account for Baker.
He has begun to breath on his own and was taken off the ventilator late Wednesday. But the road to recovery will be a long one.
“He will be out of work for a long time,” Barnett said. “Heath always provides for his family, and now he will not be able to. He is expected to remain in UAB for the next month. The medical bills will soon start rolling in. I set up the page to help take some of that stress off so that he can focus on healing.”
As of 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, $630 had been raised toward the $10,000 goal.
The father of two was on his way to work early Friday morning when his truck ran off County Road 222 shortly before 5:30 a.m. and flipped several times, throwing him from the vehicle, Alabama State Troopers said.
He was flown to UAB Hospital where he was taken into emergency surgery to remove his spleen and then reattach his skull to his spine, and he’s been medically sedated since, Barnett said.
