FULTONDALE — The city of Fultondale wants to take a step back and evaluate things for a little while.

A resolution was passed at Monday night’s city council meeting that will prevent any hotels or motels from acquiring building permits within the corporate limits of Fultondale for the next six months. This moratorium will expire on September 20, 2017.

The city of Fultondale currently houses nine different hotels, two of which are in the construction process (Holiday Inn and Hilton Inn). Those two locations will continue construction as scheduled.

“This is intended to give us an opportunity to study the hotels and what we have,” said Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery. “This gives us a little breathing room to see what we need to do next and this is what we’ve been planing to do for a number of years.”

The Fultondale City Council also:

•announced that Warren Cotton, a member of the Fultondale Police Department, has been named the new chief of police for the Adamsville Police Department. His first day with the Adamsville Police Department will be on April 1.

“I wanted to thank mayor and chief for allowing me to be a part of this department, this city. I enjoyed my stay,” said Cotton to the council.

•presented an update on the city’s food bank, which was recently moved to a new location on Stouts Rd. in Fultondale. Since the move, its traffic has increased “probably 40 to 50 percent.” The food bank opens its doors to residents on the third Saturday of every month.

•announced that Fultondale First Baptist Church will be hosting a benefits concert to raise money for Teen Challenge — a faith-based recovery program. The concert, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, will feature southern gospel music.

•rescheduled their council meeting from Monday, April 10 to Monday, April 17 at 6 p.m. in the Fultondale public library.
