- Before Thursday's grand opening, T.J. Max officials presented a $5,000 donation to the Just Keep Smiling Foundation, which helps out families with critically-ill children.
Shoppers braved chilly weather Thursday morning, in order to be the first to check out the new T.J. Maxx store in Gardendale.
The store, located in the renovated Magnolia City Place shopping center on Fieldstown Road, opened its doors at 8 a.m. Before that, T.J. Maxx presented a $5,000 check to the Just Keep Smiling Foundation, which assists families with critically-ill children.

The Gardendale store was relocated from an older location in Irondale, across from the old Century Plaza mall.
T.J Maxx — known simply as “T.J.’s” to its many fans — features discounted clothing and home accessories. The chain descended from the old Zayre discount-store chain, which had a large presence in metro Birmingham for many years before the company was sold to Ames Stores and then shut down. T.J. Maxx was spun off before the sale to Ames. (The store that moved to Gardendale was originally next door to a Zayre store.)
