The city is moving forward in getting one of the area’s largest car dealerships located within city limits.

On Monday, the Gardendale City Council approved the solicitation of bids to construct a new road to be called Dewey Barber Drive. The road will cross Mary Buckelew Parkway off of Interstate 65 Exit 275.

Dewey Barber Chevrolet, now located in Warrior, is moving to Gardendale partly because GM is pushing the dealership to upgrade its facility and it would be too expensive to upgrade the Warrior location, according to owner Scott Barber in a previous North Jefferson News article.

In May, the city of Gardendale annexed the 47-acre site where the dealership is to be located.

Also on Monday, the council authorized an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for the maintenance of the public right of way for the proposed Dewey Barber Drive.

The council set a public hearing for Dec. 3, 7 p.m., regarding economic development incentives for the benefit of Dewey Barber Chevrolet.

The public is invited to weigh in on the conversation.

In other business, the council:

• approved an operating budget and debt service budget for fiscal year 2012-2013
• gave a 2-percent cost-of-living raise to full-time and part-time employees, effective immediately
• created a parks maintenance supervisor position in the parks and recreation department
• adopted recommendations of the Jefferson County Personnel Board’s 2011-2012 annual classification survey, which will add two positions in the public works department
• appointed Bob Moore to the Planning and Zoning Board
• promoted Dale Hyche to parks and recreation superintendent on a provisional basis, following the retirement of former superintendent Stan Hogeland, who is now president of the Gardendale City Council
• agreed to seek estimates for the demolition of three houses, at 1201 Mt. Olive  Rd., 531 Tarrant Rd. and 4516 Willow St.
• set a public hearing regarding the above houses
• announced that Gardendale City Hall is closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving

The next regular Gardendale City Council meeting is Dec. 3, 7 p.m., at the Public Safety Center off of Decatur Highway.
