Mortimer Jordan 47, West Point 21: Blue Devils break into win column

Mortimer Jordan recorded its first win of the season with a 47-21 thumping of West Point on Friday.

West Point opened up their homecoming game with a 22-yard kickoff return by Tate Duckett to put the ball on the 30-yard line. On the first play Blue Devil Jallen Wells found his way into the back field and stopped a hand off for a loss of one yard. After eight plays and three first downs Duckett took the ball from the 4-yard line for a West Point touchdown. Mark Laney completed a field goal, putting the Warriors on top by seven at the end of the first.

Devlin Hodges was the starting quarterback as the Devils started their first position drive. The drive ended on the next play with fumble that was recovered by West Point, who then missed a 46-yard field goal.

With 1:26 left in the first quarter, Marquis Dobbs ran the ball in from the 1-yard line. Austin Byrom kicked the point after attempt and tied the game at 7-7.

With 25 seconds left, Blue Devil Caleb Gandy picked off a West Point pass attempt. Jordan capitalized with a 35-yard left sweeping run by Dobbs into the end zone for a touchdown. Byrom’s point after kick was good to put the Devils up by a touchdown at the end of the first quarter.

The Devils later pushed the ball to their own 36-yard line, where Dobbs ran the ball in for a touchdown with 10 minutes left.

Warrior Tate Duckett carried the ball the six yards for a score.

In the third quarter, Logan Motte caught an 61-yard pass ran 50 yards for a touchdown.

It was followed up by West Point causing a fumble that was recovered by James McCord that resulted in another touchdown.

Hodges and Conner McMillan connected on a 36-yard pass to add another touchdown. As the third quarter ended, the Blue Devils’ Yakeim Green recovered a bad snap and Seth Kennedy blocked a Warrior punt that set up one last score for the Devils.

West Point was able to get the ball moving in their favor for one last drive and score just before the end of the game.

Jordan racked up 505 yards of offense, 244 yards rushing and 261 passing.

The Devils (1-2, 1-1) host A.P. Brewer next week.
