Cross Country: Gardendale sweeps again

- Shades Valley/Jeffco International Bacalaureate runner Ryan Spahn ran away with the girls race Thursday at Mortimer Jordan. She was more than 90 seconds ahead of runner-up Krista Stricklin of Hayden.
Shades Valley/Jefferson County International Baccalaureate runner Ryan Spahn ran away from the field in the girls race, but Gardendale placed four runners in the top seven as they won their division in a cross-country meet Thursday at Mortimer Jordan.

Spahn (20:28) was more than a minute and a half clear of Hayden’s Krista Stricklin. Haylie McCleney of Mortimer Jordan was third, nearly three minutes behind Stricklin.
In the boys race, Jordan’s Gatlin Holland won with a time of 18:59, but the Rockets edged the Blue Devils in the team standings by seven points. Chase Downer of Gardendale was second, and Arizona Shaffer of Pell City finished in third place.
