Sports Roundup: Oneonta, Hayden win cross country; Rockets clip Huskies in volleyball

CROSS COUNTRY

With top Gardendale runner Miller Wood sidelined two weeks with a stress fracture, Oneonta was able to keep the Rockets out of the top spot of a boys regular-season cross country meet for the first time in two years, as they prevailed in a meet Thursday at Mortimer Jordan.

The Redskins took three of the top four spots, led by winner Alex Gililand with a 17:53 time.

Hayden won the girls division, led by individual runner up Krista Stricklin. She finished 44 seconds behind Ryan Spahn of Shades Valley/

Jefferson County Intl. Baccalaureate, who won with a time of 20:44.

Gardendale placed second, and Jordan was fourth.

VOLLEYBALL

Gardendale accomplished another of coach Lauren Morrison’s goals for the season, finishing the regular season undefeated in non-tournament matches with a 26-24, 11-25, 25-21, 25-20 win Tuesday at Hewitt-Trussville.

Bekah Myers led the Rockets (24-9) with 15 kills and four blocks. Haley Hardman added 11 kills and three blocks. Mariah Light paced the Huskies with 13 kills.

Gardendale hosts the Jefferson County Large Schools Championship all day Saturday.

Yellow Jackets fall: Corner closed out its regular season Thursday with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 loss at home to Oakman.

GOLF

Marsh scores ace: Dennis Marsh of Smokerise made a hole-in-one on the 145-yard eighth hole at Cumberland Lakes Golf Course in Pinson. His 7-iron shot was witnessed by Will Johnson, Terry Kilgo, Gene Gouthier, and Rod Hutchinson.
