A local veterans organization had the largest-ever turnout Saturday for one of its most popular community events.

The Hawkins B. Carter American Legion Post No. 255 hosted its eighth annual Easter egg hunt at Black Creek Park in Fultondale.

“It was one of the biggest turnouts we’ve ever had,” said Don Vaughn, commander. “We had about 350 kids out there and we gave away $500 in prizes.”

The post and Walker Chapel Baptist Church each gave away 100 Easter baskets at the egg hunt.

A dozen members of the post Auxiliary were at the post Friday afternoon dying 800 Easter eggs.

It was the most eggs that the American Legion has ever provided for the egg hunt, according to Auxiliary president Sandra Hart.

In addition to the baskets, eggs and prize money, the American Legion provided hot dogs, potato chips and drinks for all 350 children who attended the egg hunt.
