At least a dozen car wrecks happened on Thursday afternoon and evening in north Jefferson County due to a freak storm consisting of snow, freezing rain and sleet.
The accidents included eight reported in Gardendale, a three-car pileup on Warrior-Jasper Road and Arkadelphia Road near the Hayden area and a fatality on Interstate 65. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies said there were no serious injuries in the multi-car accident.
The Alabama Department of Public safety says Justin Clements, 30, of Tupelo, Miss. was killed in an accident on Interstate 65 at mile marker 278 near Gardendale. Authorities say he was driving a pickup truck pulling a camper southbound when he lost control on an icy patch on one of the bridges near Kimberly. Clements was ejected from the vehicle when the truck and camper overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Alabama State Troopers report that Clements was not wearing a seatbelt. Gardendale Police said they diverted traffic onto Hwy. 31 while troopers worked the wreck.
Fultondale had three recorded vehicular incidents: Two rescues and one report of a stranded vehicle. They said one of the victims of the two accidents had a gash on his forehead, but there were no serious injuries.
