PREP ROUNDUP: Hanceville boys hold off Vinemont for 57-55 win; Eagle girls soar to victory

VINEMONT — Hanceville’s varsity boys withstood a late Vinemont charge on Thursday night to earn a 57-55 victory in Class 3A, Area 11 play.

The Bulldogs (7-12) led throughout the contest — stretching their advantage to 13 points midway through the final period — before the Eagles (6-13) answered with an 18-5 spurt that was punctuated by a Tucker Mauter basket and tied the matchup with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Hanceville, however, drew a foul shortly afterward, went ahead on a Drake Bentley free throw and forced a turnover by the home team on its ensuing possession. Dalton Pirkle then added another shot from the charity stripe to push the lead to 57-55 and Vinemont’s potential game-winning trey missed its mark at the buzzer.

The Class 3A No. 7 Eagles, meanwhile, improved to 14-4 following a 74-36 victory versus the Bulldogs (7-11).
