VINEMONT — The town of South Vinemont discussed enrolling in a new technology service which would be able to deliver real time information to residents via text messages, but ultimately held off until councilmembers could look into the program more thoroughly.

Senior Account Executive with TextMyGov Brigham Taylor spoke to the council via video-chat Tuesday, Aug. 13, to explain the benefits of the service.

Taylor said the company purchases resident data sets through local branches of the United States Postal Service which would allow it to send a one time “welcome message” allowing residents the opportunity to enroll in the alert system.

Residents would also be able to sign-up via the town’s website.

Taylor said the system would allow the town to tailor alerts for things such as road closures, severe weather, events and municipal services. Residents would also have the ability to send in information regarding potential work orders or issues directly through text message which would be filtered automatically to the correct contact person.

The company’s website boasts more than 800 nationwide customers and Taylor noted several neighboring North-Central Alabama municipalities such as Falkville, Arab and Gardendale have begun utilizing the service.

Councilmembers appeared to be open to the possibility of the service, but preferred to think about the information they had been given until the next scheduled council meeting before making a decision. If the town chooses to enroll, it would need to sign a three-year contract agreeing to a $1,500 subscription fee as well as a one-time $500 setup fee.
