‘When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” – Fred Rogers

You almost have to believe that Mr. Rogers had Cullman EMA Director Phyllis Little in mind when he said this. If ever there was a helper, it’s The Cullman Times 2020 Distinguished Citizen of the Year Phyllis Little. While Ms. Little would likely demur, saying she is but one of many who help before, during and after disaster strikes, her steady presence and clear capability make her a calming influence when it’s needed the most.

She is respected and trusted by elected officials in Cullman and her peers around the state. Cullman County is indeed fortunate to have a public servant of her caliber, and we are proud to call her our Distinguished Citizen of the Year. We should note that this selection was made prior to the COVID-19 response began. Observing Ms. Little at work since then – providing updates and working behind the scenes on this public health crisis – has only confirmed that she is the perfect choice for this award.

We’re also pleased to bring you the stories of our Unsung Heroes. These are individuals nominated by you. In the past, we have let the nominations speak to the caliber of these individuals, but we felt this year we really wanted to dig in a little deeper and bring you more of their stories. It wasn’t easy. With schools closing and nursing homes locking down, we had to be fast and creative to get to these amazing people – all without letting them know what we were really up to. You see, they are finding out at the same time you are that they are The Times 2020 Unsung Heroes. We are hopeful that we’ll soon be able to present them with a plaque and celebrate with them personally, but right now, we are doing so from a distance.

And they deserve to be celebrated. When you read how Randy Wood, Colton Hunter and Kason Hitt, Brenda McGriff and Susie and Justin Dickerson give to others, we hope you’ll be inspired to do the same. Many people are in need and many more will be soon. These Heroes serve as shining examples of how each of us can make our world better for others.

Profile 2020 also showcases what’s been happening in our cities and towns and where they are headed next.

We hope you enjoy Profile 2020 and that it reminds us of the generosity, selflessness and determination that makes Cullman’s people and places special.
