Two people were arrested this week in connection with a December 2018 traffic fatality on Cherokee Avenue.

Terry Autwell, 28, of Hanceville and Skylar Higgins, 20, of Hayden, have been charged with criminal negligent homicide, a misdemeanor, according to a statement from Cullman Police Officer Joey Duncan with the department’s traffic homicide team.

The victim, April Dawn Landinger, 30, of Hanceville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Landinger was a passenger in a Hyundai Sonata, driven by Autwell, when it was struck by a Ford Explorer driven by Higgins, who was given a speeding charge at that time.

The homicide team’s investigation concluded Autwell’s failure to yield right of way, and Higgins’ excessive rate of speed contributed to Landinger’s death.

Landinger is survived by a 7-year-old daughter.

Arrest records also show that Autwell was arrested in June by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office as a sex offender failing to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, which is Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. The sex offender status of Autwell is related to a case in Georgia and may carry more implications.
