Cullman’s boys soccer team has been disqualified from the Class 6A playoffs after violating the Alabama High School Athletic Association Outside Participation Rule.
“We are deeply disappointed and saddened for our players, families and coaches,” said Cullman High Principal Kim Hall in a statement.
The school, which self-reported the violation on Monday, was also fined and placed on probation for one year.
The Outside Participation Rule states that a student who is a member of any school athletic team (grades 7-12) may not participate (includes practice) on a non-school team in the same sport during the school season of that sport.
The No. 3 Bearcats defeated Oxford 2-0 in a first-round matchup and were set to travel to No. 5 Florence on Tuesday.
Cullman won the 6A state title in 2016 and finished second in 2017.
