- Travis Wayne Evans, 51, was arrested Wednesday after police said they observed him take a bag out of the bed of an alleged victim’s truck and place it in his own.
A string of thefts over the past three weeks led Cullman Police Department investigators to arrest a Warrior man earlier this week, after they observed him allegedly stealing items from the bed of a truck parked at Lowe’s home improvement store.
Travis Wayne Evans, 51, was arrested Wednesday after police said they observed him take a bag out of the bed of an alleged victim’s truck and place it in his own. He was charged with unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle and booked into the Cullman County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.
CPD began the undercover investigation following multiple reports of recent theft in which power tools were stolen from vehicles, all at the Lowe’s parking lot.
“There was video of the suspect committing the thefts and investigators had a description of the vehicle being used,” CPD said in a release. “On the morning of 2/8/17, investigators were positioned in various positions in and around the Lowe’s parking lot. After the business opened, a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle was observed driving through the parking lot on multiple occasions. The vehicle would park but did not enter the business.
“Eventually the truck parked, and a white male exited. He was observed by investigators walking around parked vehicles, and then he reached into the bed of a parked vehicle and removed a red bag and placed it into the bed of his vehicle. The suspect then got in his vehicle and attempted to leave the parking lot.”
Police recovered the bag and discovered it contained assorted power tools. The bag and its contents were returned to their owner.
At the time of Evans’ arrest, he had active arrest warrants for theft with other law enforcement agencies, police said. He is also on probation for earlier theft convictions following his release from prison in November of last year.
Evans will be facing additional charges for the prior thefts, police added.
Sgt. Scott Sanford was the lead investigator, and coordinated the operation that led to the arrest, CPD said. Patrol Officers Jeff Mize and Roy Bates also assisted.
