WEST POINT — Miriam Oldacre couldn’t help but soak up every moment.

After all, the West Point basketball standout certainly earned the opportunity to do just that.

Oldacre — surrounded by family, friends, teammates, coaches and administrators inside the high school library — signed a scholarship with the University of Montevallo on Wednesday.

She will begin her collegiate career with the Division II Lady Falcons beginning in 2020.

“I’m just really thankful for my community, my team, and all of the adults and coaches who have pushed me,” Oldacre said. “I’m thankful that everyone came out here to support me. It’s a really great feeling.”

Oldacre put together a fantastic junior season and is off to a great start to her senior campaign as well.

In 2018-19, she averaged 16.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game en route to corralling All-County, All-Area and All-State (Class 5A third team) honors.

She helped the Lady Warriors finish 27-6 and win the Cullman County Tournament for the first time since 2006. West Point also advanced to the Northwest Regional Tournament for the first time since 2006.

During her tenure with the program, Oldacre has learned lessons she plans to take with her moving forward.

“Sometimes injuries happen, you have rough games, things don’t go your way,” she said. “You just have to push through it, though, because it makes you stronger and your team stronger when you face adversity.”

As for coach John Welborn, he’ll miss Oldacre when next season rolls around.

However, he’s also happy for her and has no doubt she’ll shine at the next level.

“They’re getting a hard-nosed competitor — I can tell you that,” Welborn said. “When she gets down there, she’s not going to sit on the bench. She’s going to be on the floor. That’s just the way she is. She’ll be a freshman going against seniors, but she’s not going to sit on the bench. She’s gotten a lot stronger. She’s shooting the ball a lot better. She’s seeing the best defender in every game we play. People are focusing on her.”
