WEST POINT — Cullman defeated Decatur 7-3 on Thursday to earn a Class 6A, Area 14 series win and improve to 10-10 this season.
The No. 10 Bearcats lost Thursday’s opener against the Red Raiders 5-3 before bouncing back with a solid showing in the tiebreaker.
Niklas Fondren (RBI) had two hits for Cullman in the victory, while Ben Hollis (two RBIs), Brady Patterson (RBI), Cooper Beck and Brennen Norton netted one hit apiece.
Nicholas Braswell and Dylon Wallace each racked up one RBI.
Braxton Jones notched the win on the mound, scattering four hits and eight strikeouts in the complete game effort.
“Decatur got out to an early lead (in Game 1), and we constantly found ourselves fighting uphill,” coach Brent Patterson said. “They came up with big hits early and big outs late when we were trying to mount a comeback. Braxton gave us a big lift in Game 2 to take the tiebreaker. We were able to flip the script and score early runs to give us some breathing room.
“In the end, we have just got to realize that each game and each area series will be a fight, and we need to get better in every area to give ourselves the best chance to move on.”
Beck (RBI), Cole Fuller (RBI), Norton and Braswell tallied one hit apiece in the 5-3 loss. Peyton Colvard added one RBI.
