Big Bridge is seen Tuesday afternoon.

CRANE HILL — A year ago, Julian Morris got the news no one wants — the love of his life died in a car wreck on County Road 222 near Big Bridge, a winding stretch of highway that’s seen many wrecks over the years.

On Tuesday, he asked the Cullman County Commission to consider safety improvements, traffic signs, guard rails, anything, so that no one else gets hurt or worse.

“When the road was designed, it wasn’t banked properly,” the Crane Hill resident said. “Now, the population is growing out there. You’ve got people from Birmingham and everywhere else moving in. You’re going to have more wrecks out there.”

Veronica Morris, 73, was killed when another vehicle collided with hers on County Road 222 near Big Bridge June 5, 2016. Since then, there’s been a number of wrecks near the location. Alabama State Troopers didn’t have a complete tally of wrecks for the area Tuesday.

The county has looked at the road design to find ways to improve it, but any changes will likely be costly. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) recently finished a $1 million paving project on the road, resurfacing five miles from Interstate 65 at Good Hope to Trimble.
