COUNTY GOLF TOURNAMENT: Good Hope’s Pearson, West Point’s Rodgers claim titles; Fairview squads sweep again

- West Point's Lindsey Rodgers holds up her hardware after winning the individual title during Wednesday's county golf tournament.
Cole Pearson knew exactly where he stood entering the back nine on Wednesday.
The Good Hope junior held a slight lead over Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust and didn’t have any intention of letting it slip away.
No worries there.
Pearson carded a solid 36 to punctuate a 4-over round of 76 at Cullman Golf Course and held off a serious fight from Foust to win this year’s individual crown at the Cullman County Golf Tournament.
His two-day total of 158 (82-76) bettered Foust’s 161 (83-78) by just three strokes.
“Most tournaments leading up to this, I had a bad front nine and a good back nine,” Pearson said. “I birdied No. 11 and got in a groove. After that, I just wanted to hit the fairway, hit the green and make par. I played safe coming in for sure. I knew I was up.”
Pearson opened the day one back of Fairview’s Austin Scott but made a double bogey on the first hole.
However, he responded with four birdies to close out his final 17 holes to surge ahead and nab the win.
“It’s nice to get it back to Good Hope after last year,” Pearson said. “It’s worth the wait. I really wanted to get this one. We’ve had a good string of golfers come through here.”
Fairview’s boys, meanwhile, collected back-to-back team titles after ending the two-day tournament with an overall score of 709. Hunter McKelvy (86, 80 — 166), Austin Scott (81, 94 — 175), Seth Lancaster (89, 98 — 187) and Hunter Yeager (97, 96 — 193) were the best four rounds for the Purple and Gold, which defeated the Raiders by 21 shots (730).
Hunter Whitehead, who shot an 85 during Tuesday’s round at TP Country Club, didn’t play due to illness.
Pearson, Foust, McKelvy and Scott earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
West Point’s Lindsey Rodgers began the final round four shots clear of defending champion Dalys Mullican.
She finished the day seven ahead to win her second individual girls title in the past three years.
Rodgers (88, 84 — 172) didn’t have to sweat Fairview’s No. 1 (92, 87 — 179) too much on the course.
“When I heard the ball hit the cup on the last hole, it felt really good,” said a beaming Rodgers. “Dalys played well. It’s good to play with someone who’s good, because it makes you play that much better. I just wanted to stay out of trouble and keep it in play. I’m really glad that I was able to win this my senior year.”
While Rodgers secured the low-medalist honor, Mullican and the Lady Aggies won their sixth straight county title, beating Hanceville by 137 shots (561 to 698).
Maci Yeager (94, 94 — 188), Aladie Howse (105, 89 — 194) and Valarie Yarbrough (121, 107 — 228) rounded out the scores.
Rodgers, Mullican, Yeager and Howse made the All-Tournament Team.
Fairview coach Kurt Knight was pleased with his team’s ability to close out a tough two-day stretch.
“I was proud of the kids to come out and battle through the rainy rounds,” he said. “We got through it, though. We’re happy to win.”
