LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wilson shoots final-round 68, secures 32nd annual Buck Shear Memorial crown

- Blaise Wilson, right, shows off his hardware next to Buddy Shear, left, after claiming the crown at the 32nd annual Buck Shear Memorial Golf Tournament at Cullman Golf Course this past Sunday.
There was no snafu for Blaise Wilson this time around.
Almost a month after letting a seven-stroke lead slip on by during the final round of the TP Invitational, the University of North Alabama graduate found himself ahead of the pack yet again — this time entering Day 2 of the Buck Shear Memorial Tournament at Cullman Golf Course.
However, Wilson came to play on Sunday morning, firing off an easy round of 68 to turn his two-shot cushion into a four-stroke victory over Jay Hayes.
“This definitely felt great from a psyche standpoint,” Wilson joked. “I didn’t hit it that good, and it got pretty close after six or seven holes. But the juices got flowing after that. That type of golf makes things interesting. I really like needing to play well to win, and that’s what I was able to do on Sunday.
Behind Wilson (133) and Hayes (137) in the championship “A” flight were Eli Marty and Kevin Byrd (141), Billy Conner (142), Zach Weaver (145), J.J. Adams (149) and Bob Kurtz (151).
Conner secured the senior crown, while Kurtz — coming off his record-setting feat last week — notched the super-senior title over a group of game opponents.
“It was a really good tournament,” Wilson said. “I’ve heard a lot of good stories about Buck, so it felt great to be a part of this one. It was nice to win it, too.”
Over in the championship “B” flight, last year’s champ Sylas Elliott earned first-place honors with a two-day score of 144. He bested Adam Scott (145) by one shot and Bill Griffin (153) by nine. Luke Wilson (154), Kevin Drake (158), Trey Hanvey (158) and Gary Stephenson (160) rounded out the group.
The remaining flights are as follows:
First flight
Turkey Kent, 151; Mark Aderhold, 154; B.J. Allbright and Mike Williamson, 156; Layne Rice, Greg Aderhold and Matt Wallington. 158.
Second flight
Buddy Shear, 162; Wade Casey, 163; Ed Calvery, 164; Paul Stidham, 166; Wayne Fuller, 168; John Harris, 170; and Ronnie Golden, 172.
Third flight
Kip Potter, 163; Bobby Knight, 165; Nick Speer, 174; Jim Abt and Kelly Cooper, 181; William Woo, 182; and Tom Woo, 201.
College Baseball
Keegan Thompson keeps on adding to his trophy case.
The former Cullman Bearcat phenom and current Auburn standout was selected to Baseball America’s Freshman All-American Team on Monday afternoon. He was one of four pitchers across the country to make the honorary squad.
Thompson finished his first season on the Plains with a respectable 5-3 record to go along with a 73 strikeouts and a team-leading 2.01 ERA in 89 innings pitched. He made 12 starts and saved one game for the Tigers, while limiting opposing hitters to a .192 batting average. Thompson was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman and College Baseball of America Freshman All-American Team earlier this season.
He joined Florida’s Logan Shore and Vanderbilt’s Bryan Reynolds as SEC selections.
Pro Baseball
Former Cullman and Alabama star Ben Moore traded in his Crimson red for Boston red during his professional baseball debut with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Monday afternoon.
Moore made the most of his opportunity, too, going 2 for 4 at the plate with a double, a walk, two RBIs and two runs in an 11-8 win over the GCL Orioles.
Moore’s performance comes on the back of fellow former Bearcat Chase Mallard, who tossed three perfect innings during his pro debut with the Bluefield Blue Jays earlier this month.
