JeffCo Baseball Tournament: Pleasant Grove 4, Gardendale 1

Gardendale belted out 11 hits but could not bring any runners across home plate until the last inning, as they fell 4-1 to Pleasant Grove in the second day of the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament.

The Spartans got on the board with a run in the fifth inning, and then DeQuan Johnson sealed the deal in the sixth with a two-run single.

John Michael Mathews was 2-for-4 and drove in the Rockets’ only run. Hunter Crook, Dylan Oliver and Joseph Calvert had two hits apiece.

Matt White went the distance for the Spartans, striking out seven and allowing no walks. Jacob Hallmark took the loss for the Rockets in five innings’ work, yielding four hits while fanning two batters.

Gardendale (7-6) is out now of contention for the tournament title with two losses; they will play at Minor on Wednesday. Pleasant Grove is 2-0 in pool play and goes to Corner on Wednesday.
