Gardendale overcame a 13-point deficit in the team standings going into the consolation semifinals to win the Jefferson County Wrestling Championship, which finished Saturday at Pinson Valley High School.

The Rockets’ Daniel Swann won the 140-pound championship, while Andrew Todd was first at 145 pounds. In all, Gardendale placed wrestlers in the top four places of 10 different weight classes.

The Rockets edged Oak Grove by nine points. Clay-Chalkville, the leader at the lunch break Saturday, fell to third.

Fultondale finished fifth, with Brett Pennington taking the 152-pound title. The Wildcats were 8.5 points ahead of sixth-place Mortimer Jordan, whose Brandon Brindley won his third straight county title, this time at 125 pounds. Travis Shelnutt also won the 119-pound title for the Blue Devils.

Corner, whose second-year team only has five wrestlers, finished 11th.
