PREP BASKETBALL: Holly Pond’s Jones named to Class 3A All-State 1st Team; Local trio also gains recognition

Drew Jones couldn’t have done much more to prove himself on the court this season.

After all, he spearheaded a tremendous Holly Pond basketball team that won 32 games, set numerous school records and advanced to the state tournament for the second time in the past four years.

There has to be a reward for that, right?

Most definitely.

Jones was one of just five players to make the cut as a first-teamer in Class 3A when the Alabama Sports Writers Association revealed this year’s All-State Boys Basketball Teams late Saturday night.

Cold Springs’ Jesse Lee (2A third-teamer), St. Bernard’s Christian Peterson (2A honorable mention) and Holly Pond’s Bailey Smith (3A honorable mention also pulled in accolades as some of Alabama’s best overall talent.

Jones’ selection as a first-team honoree marks the fourth straight year a Cullman County standout has garnered the state’s highest praise — Cold Springs’ Triston Chambers (2014-16), Cullman’s Lawson Schaffer (2014-15) and Holly Pond’s Austin Smith (2015) all earned first-team recognition for their respective programs following equally sensational campaigns.

The Green and White superstar led his squad in points per outing (18.6) and rebounds per outing (6.6), while amassing 60 steals, 51 assists and 24 blocks. His 613 points were third in 3A behind Montevallo’s Da’Shaunte Smith (632) and Midfield’s Kam Woods (627), which is pretty wild when taking into consideration he sat out the majority of fourth quarters this season.

The Lee University signee ended his prep career with 1,498 points.

“Drew really developed into a tremendous player,” Holly Pond coach Mitch Morris said. “Not just on the offensive side, either. By the time he finished playing for me, he turned into an all-around player. Definitely one of the better ones in the state. Great kid, great teammate. He was a big reason we had the success we did, even though he probably played less minutes than his past two seasons on varsity.”

Lee stepped into the offensive hole left by the departures of Chambers and Josh Freeman and put forth one heck of a senior season for the Blue and Gold, who won 20 games — the second most in the county.

The 5’9″ guard complied 14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game for the Eagles to go along with 60 steals and eight blocks. The budding star helped his team wrap up an area tournament crown and the program’s third sub-regional home game in the past four seasons.

“We always knew Jesse had a lot of natural talent,” Cold Springs coach Tim Willoughby said. “Around Christmastime, things really began to click for him. All of the sudden, he understood about being the quarterback for an offense. His scoring average went way up, but his volume wasn’t changing. To me, Jesse improved more during his senior season than any player I’ve ever coached.

“He’s also a really devout Christian and conducts himself that way. He was always trying to build other kids up. He was very quick to toss in positive words in the huddle. He is what he is, a great kid.”

Although the Saints didn’t have the season they wanted, Peterson continued his progression toward becoming one of 2A’s top scorers.

The junior averaged 19.9 points per game — fifth highest in his classification — as well as 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. The sharpshooter, who also tallied 74 steals and 11 blocks, contributed greatly to each and every one of his team’s victories.

He’ll enter next season sitting at 1,077 career points.

“Christian is a one-of-a-kind player to me,” St. Bernard coach Greg Boatright said. “He’s humble, but he’s also a fierce competitor. If you tell him to do something, it’s done. His work ethic paid off for him. I expect him to continue to work and improve. I’m confident he’ll do it, too. He has that demeanor. He’s a gem.”

If Holly Pond was a Ferrari, Smith was the engine under the hood.

The steady point guard put up modest numbers — 9.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per matchup — but his calming presence on the floor paid big dividends for the Broncos throughout the year. His team-high 98 steals helped turned suffocating defensive possessions into a bevy of easy baskets for his teammates, three of whom averaged more than 10 points per game.

“Everybody felt better and more confident when Bailey had the ball in his hands,” Morris said. “His stats probably weren’t where he would’ve liked them to be, but he led us in assists and steals and ran the show. On another team, he could easily put up 25 points every single night.”
