PREP ROUNDUP: Cullman’s Bussman still alive in 6A state singles, doubles
MOBILE — Gentry Bussman cruised to the semis in No. 5 singles and paired with Kate Hood for another two victories in No. 2 doubles to highlight Cullman’s first day at the Class 6A state tennis tournament on Thursday.
Bussman and Hood dropped the opening set of their quarterfinals doubles match 2-6 but clinched the comeback with 6-3, 7-6 wins the next two.
Olivia Sharpton advanced to the quarters in No. 1 singles before falling in a three-setter. Lilli Watson (No. 2), Kaci Donaldson (No. 3) and Emily Graves (No. 1) all won their opening-round matches, as did Graves and Emily Mullins in No. 3 doubles.
Sharpton and Watson are still kicking in No. 1 doubles. They’ll face Decatur for a semifinal berth when play resumes Friday.
The Lady Bearcats enter the final day fourth.
Matthew Davis and Donny Camp were the last Black and Gold boys standing after surviving a spotless first match and a three-setter in the No. 1 doubles quarterfinals.
Camp, Jacob Lambert, Parker Adams, Hunter Manley and Drew Fillinger started the day with wins in the second through sixth singles posts. Manley-Adams (No. 2) and Lambert-Fillinger (No. 3) also started strong in doubles.
West Point’s boys finished eighth at the 4A-5A state tournament, also in Mobile.
Keston Hembree and Matt Daniel claimed two matches to reach the quarters in No. 3 doubles.
Lance Ray (No. 3), Daniel (No. 6) and Carson Moon-Jacob Daniel (No. 2) each won their openers.
Prep Softball
Cold Springs only mustered two hits in the first five innings but ripped off six knocks and five runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat West Point 5-4 on Thursday.
Hanna Wilson’s and Kelsey Hester’s one-base contributions were all she wrote offensively for the Lady Eagles (14-8-2) early before Rilee White and Taylor Payne kicked off the home half of the sixth with a single and double, respectively. Bailey West followed with a two-run single, while Savanna Taylor plated one with a poke of her own. Emily Williams whipped up a base hit, and eighth-grader Kylan Hamby’s single pushed across the game-winning run.
“It was awesome,” Cold Springs coach Patrick West said. “A heckuva comeback.”
White went all seven innings in the circle for the Eagles, striking out five and yielding three hits and two walks.
Tess Hembree brought in Karli Beck with a double in the fifth inning. The Warriors took advantage of a trio of Cold Springs errors to tack on three more runs the following frame.
Jordyn Kimbrell and Beck had West Point’s other hits. Kimbrell also stole a base.
Jeri Beasley fanned seven in the loss.
‰ Cullman 4, Mortimer Jordan 2: Claire Jenkins led off the fifth inning with her eighth home run of the spring, and Tiffani Schwaiger sent Elli Dixon around with a single shortly thereafter to give the Class 6A No. 8 Bearcats the edge over the 5A No. 10 Blue Devils.
Mortimer Jordan loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Cullman used a double play to turn back the host and escape the inning unscathed.
Dixon, Kylie Witcher and Taiya Ponder had hits.
Olivia Schwaiger improved to 17-7 following a complete game effort. She K’d two, walked one and gave up eight hits and two runs, both unearned.
‰ Good Hope 7, Falkville 6: Josie McDonald had three RBIs, and Darby Randolph and Skylar Tucker each picked up a pair to allow the Raiders (14-14) a little breathing room for a seventh-inning rally by the Blue Devils.
McDonald and Tucker both had doubles as part of two-hit outings. Randolph was good for RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings. MaKailey Speegle and Bailey Starnes also had hits.
Prep Golf
Fairview’s boys and girls backed up Wednesday’s county championship sweep with a pair of wins over Brindlee Mountain, J.B. Pennington and Hokes Bluff Thursday at Chesley Oaks.
Trey Hanvey led the Aggies to a nine-hole team score of 151 with a 33, the low round of the day. Hunter McKelvy (37), James Arnold (40) and Hunter Whitehead (41) also contributed.
Fairview’s girls, paced by Maci Yeager’s ladies-best 45, combined for a 146. Dalys Mullican (48) and Ana Dahlke (53) had the squad’s other counting scores.
Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust carded a 43.
Prep Girls Soccer
% Fairview 3, St. Bernard 1: Ashley Latham booted in a pair of goals, and Khylah McLeroy scored once as the Lady Aggies assured they’ll head into the playoffs on a high note Thursday on the road.
Fairview, which wrapped up its first regular season as a program 3-10-1, will travel to Sylacauga for a first-round matchup Saturday at 11 a.m.
