PREP ROUNDUP: Cullman’s Heatherly hurls no-hitter; Lady Bearcats’ Cook scores 5 goals

With so little time between basketball and baseball seasons, Cullman coach Brent Patterson isn’t sure ace Jacob Heatherly is “really 100 percent there” as far as pitching is concerned.

Thompson might beg to differ.

Heatherly had a Thursday night he’ll never forget, hurling a no-hitter in a 4-0 shutout of the Class 7A Warriors. The Alabama commit struck out 11 and walked four to waltz away with the memorable win in a Birmingham-Huntsville Classic game played at Pelham.

Heatherly took the mound in the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead and promptly walked the first and third batters to put himself in a pickle. Back-to-back K’s just as quickly ended the jam, however.

There were no serious threats the rest of the evening.

Patterson was pretty impressed, to say the least.

“Especially against a great Thompson team that went to the finals last year and returned pretty much everyone it had,” he said. “That’s a very, very quality lineup he did that against. He really commanded his fastball and used the curveball to keep them off balance.”

Kolby Robinson was 2 for 4 with an RBI to pace the Bearcats at the plate. Carter Bowen (double, RBI), Noah Fondren (two runs), Owen Lovell, Caleb Lipsey and Trent Price contributed a hit apiece. Lovell also stole a base.

Cullman (2-2) will head to Grissom Friday at 4 p.m. before beginning tourney play at an undetermined time and place.

Have a night, Kaitlin Cook.

The junior tied a school record with all five goals as the Lady Bearcats opened section play with a home shutout of the Patriots.

Ashley Grace Uphold started at goalkeeper and was eventually relieved by Anna Laidley.

The win was a nice way for 6A No. 3 Cullman (6-1) to rebound from its first loss of the season a week earlier at Arab.

Danville 5, West Point 1

Steven Rodriguez netted the Warriors’ goal in a road defeat to the Hawks. West Point’s girls fell 8-0 in earlier action.
