PREP ROUNDUP: Shaddix’s soccer selection gives Cullman 3rd rep at All-Star Week
Nearly two weeks after the end of a record-breaking spring, Cullman’s girls soccer is claiming yet another success.
According to a Monday announcement by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association, midfielder Leah Shaddix was one of 18 juniors named to the North roster for the summer’s North-South All-Star girls soccer game.
The selection is the first for the Lady Bearcats since Hannah Bales in 2010 and gives Cullman High a grand total of three representatives at the 19th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week. Shaddix will hit the pitch at Montgomery’s Emory Folmar Soccer Complex July 21st, the same day Kolby Robinson and Claire Jenkins will be in the Capitol City for respective baseball and softball showcases.
The North girls were 3-1 winners a year ago and own an 11-2-1 stranglehold in the 14-year series.
Shaddix and the Black and Gold girls were 17-4-1 and reached the second round of the playoffs this season. They capped off the 2015 campaign third in the state’s 6A rankings.
Prep Golf
Fairview’s Trey Hanvey and West Point’s Lindsey Rodgers both reside in 11th place in their respective divisions following opening-day action at the state golf tournament in Mobile on Monday.
Hanvey shot a 9-over 80 on the tough Falls Course at Robert Trent Jones — Magnolia Grove and will enter Day 2 nine strokes behind Guntersville’s Reagan Harrell, who shot an even-par 71 in the Class 5A grouping.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ 4A-5A pairings, Rodgers had a difficult round on the Crossings Course en route to an 87. Alabama Christian’s Hannah Sager leads the field following a 1-under 71.
Both Cullman County golfers will wrap up play on Tuesday.
State Heptathlon/Decathlon
Matt Cahoon led a small group of local contenders at the first day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Heptathlon/Decathlon Monday.
The Bronco sophomore completed the first five events in 18th place in a field of more than 40 participants.
He took first place in the shot put with a toss of 41-1 and third overall in the high jump to eclipse half the field despite average showings in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash and long jump events.
Fairview’s Bailey Strong was Mr. Consistency for the Aggies, completing four of his five events between 22nd and 25th place to secure 26th overall.
Teammates Kaleb Jones (40th) and Alexus Lindsey (32nd) also took part in the annual athletic showdown.
The boys will wrap up the decathlon Tuesday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, javelin, pole vault and 1,600-meter run.
The heptathlon will conclude Tuesday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
