BASEBALL: West Point 8U All-Stars finish 5th at Dizzy Dean State Tournament
The West Point 8U All-Stars wrapped up a terrific season earlier this month, placing fifth at the Dizzy Dean State Baseball Tournament in Scottsboro and finishing the summer with a 20-2 record.
The outstanding team opened the annual showdown with a loss to Southside before reeling off consecutive wins against Madison Blue, ACS and WC Cordova. The Warriors were then eliminated by Odenville.
Despite the tough outcome, coach Jason Echols couldn’t have been more proud of his squad.
“They were definitely a good group to work with … a bunch of fine young men,” he said. “I give all the credit to the kids. As coaches, we direct them, work with them, support them, put in time with them, but it’s up to the kids to commit, buy-in and believe in themselves to accomplish what they did.”
West Point’s roster includes: Carter McAfee, Andrew Godwin, Skylar Echols, Brycen Echols, Tripp Dingler, Max Patterson, Walker Brown, Lane Forsyth, Tyler Forsyth, Austin Freeman, Cooper Hines, Brady Chapman, Westin Barnette and Brayden Kilpatrick.
Josh Brown, Lance Echols and Greg McAfee served as assistant coaches.
“It was very enjoyable for us coaches,” Echols added. “A group of kids like that coming together. Some know each other, some don’t. They develop relationships and bond. They mesh and become a family. It was fun to watch them grow and trust each other and work hard for each other.”
