Annual Jim-and-Nicks tourney under way at Bragg

The annual Jim-and-Nicks Invitational wrestling tournament got under way Friday night at Bragg Middle School Gym with some great action taking place on the opening night of the two-day, 14-team event.
Some of the winners in the early rounds included the following.
In the 135-pound class, Hayden’s Tyler Newton pinnned Dora’s Biddle. Also at 135, Gardendale’s Austin Graham defeated Hayden’s Dusten Jewell, 5-1. At 160, Fultondale’s Wesley Horn pinned Hewitt-Trussville’s Howard. Also at 160, Mortimer Jordan’s James Stewart pinned Erwin’s Smith in only 37 seconds.
At 160, Gardendale’s DeRon Washington pinned Hayden’s Adam Sharp 14 seconds into the second period. Then in second round match, he won a tech fall over Fultondale’s Daniel Davidson, 18-1.
At 215, Gardendale’s Robert Becker pinned Shades Valley’s Harold in only 47 seconds. Also at 215, Fultondale’s Brandon Nelson pinned Erwin’s Harper with 50 seconds left in the opening period. Another match at 215, went to Fultondale’s Sherman Owens, who pinned Hayden’s Calvin Hale with 23 seconds left in the second period.
At 112, Gardendale’s Logan Gardner pinned Mortimer Jordan’s J. Howse 15 seconds into the second period of their match. At 103, Gardendale’s Bradley Bowen took a 10-6 win over Dora’s Edwards.
At 119, Gardednale’s Hayman beat Brookwood’s Miles, 9-5. At 152, Fultondale’s Alec Williams pinned Chelsea’s Hallmark in 1:29 of the first period.
At 135, Fultondale’s Chris Self pinned Gardendale’s Austin Graham with 40 seconds left in the opening period of their match. At 135 also, Hayden’s Paul Gadilhe pinned Chelsea’s Britt 45 seconds into their match. In another match at 135, Futondale’s Steven Dodgen beat Shelby County’s Tortorici, 12-1.
In still another match at 135, Hayden’s Tyler Newton pinned Chelsea’s Withers 13 seconds into the third period of their match. At 140, Fultondale’s S. Ingram pinned Brookwood’s Stone in 1:47.
At 135, Mortimer Jordan’s Pate beat Hewitt-Trussville’s Borden 21-12. At 140, Jordan’ Ricky Coe pinned Chelsea’s Serrell. Also at 140, Gardendale’s Brandon Painter pinned Hewitt-Trussville’s Currier.
Still at 140, Fultondale’s Brett Pennington won by pin. At 145, Jordan’s Matt Barnett won by pin. Also at 145, Gardendale’s Zac Bowen won by pin. Hayden’s Bryant Ward won by pin.
Fultondale’s Wesley Horn also won by pin.
Action resumes this morning at 8:30 a.m. at the middle school gym.
