A common reaction to being a victim of a burglary may be anger or fear.

However, a Gardendale business owner has decided to put a positive spin on the experience two weeks after his store was targeted.

This week, Jeff Dennis of Jeff Dennis Jewelers, gave away jewelry in an effort bring hope to his community. On Monday, Dennis had 100 cross necklaces to hand out. The 18-inch sterling silver chain and cross pendant would normally sell for $39.95.

“A friend of mine did this out in California and gave away a heart necklace for Valentine’s Day,” Dennis said. “It’s one of those things that if you try to be a blessing to someone, then hopefully we’ll be blessed.”

He said while the necklaces are free, he truly wants only those who have experienced a recent hardship or who may be in need of hope to have the jewelry. Dennis said he had been touched by some of the stories he had heard, including area residents who have either lost jobs or had severe medical issues.

“We had a huge response and it’s been a little overwhelming,” he said on Tuesday. “It makes you realize the things you’re going through in life are minimal in comparison to what others are facing.”

Dennis appeared on Fox 6’s “Good Day Alabama” Monday morning to announce the giveaway. By Tuesday, he said he had only a small amount of the necklaces remaining and that he would give away 100 more starting Wednesday.

Gardendale First Baptist Church had also provided Dennis with CDs of sermons given by Pastor Kevin Hamm to be given away with each necklace. Dennis said he had only a few CDs remaining and those would also be handed out while supplies last.

Dennis’ store was one of three business in Gardendale that were burglarized last month. Surveillance video captured the suspect entering the jewelry store and smashing display cases before fleeing. Items taken included wedding bands and watches.

There have been no arrests made in the burglaries as of press time.
