Haylie McCleney selected to World Championship Team

Former Mortimer Jordan and University of Alabama star Haylie McCleney has been named to the 2018 USA Softball Women’s National Team for the fifth straight year.

The roster is made up of 17 athletes who were evaluated and chosen by the USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Committee. The committee announced its roster Saturday.

As a member of the World Championship roster, McCleney is scheduled to compete at the World Cup of Softball and the 2018 World Baseball Softball Confederation Women’s World Championship this summer in Japan. This year’s team hopes to defend a gold medal finish at the 2016 WBSC Women’s World Championship while also qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

McCleney, a Mortimer Jordan alum, played a vital role for the 2016 gold medalists. She hit .400 (10-for-25) with a home run, six RBI and seven runs scored through the WBSC World Championships.

In 2014, McCleney swung for a .370 average with a triple, two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored as Team USA charged on to a silver finish. A year earlier at the Junior Women’s World Championship, she hit .450 with eight RBI and as many runs scored for the silver medalists.
