COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Good Hope grad, UAB’s Goodwin named C-USA Pitcher of the Week
Good Hope graduate Cara Goodwin was picked as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Monday, sweeping the conference’s top honors with UAB softball teammate and Player of the Week Sara Beth Williamson.
Goodwin earned the accolade after snagging wins in all four appearances this past week. The most impressive outing was the sophomore’s last, a complete-game, 1-0 shutout of No. 13/11 Minnesota to cap off the Blazers’ 4-0 showing at the weekend’s Citrus Classic 2 in Orlando.
Goodwin paved the way for a two-win Sunday with five solid innings of relief in a 7-4 comeback against Western Illinois.
“Cara Goodwin had an amazing day,” UAB coach Marla Townsend said in a press release. “She was the epitome of relentless. Her teammates got behind her and made some outstanding defensive plays.”
In addition to her big win over the Big Ten’s Minnesota, Goodwin also helped knock off the Southeastern Conference’s Mississippi State 5-4 in extra innings on Tuesday. She did her part in the comeback with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball after taking over in the sixth facing a 4-2 deficit.
Goodwin’s other win came in a 3-1 triumph over Northern Iowa. She went the distance against the Panthers, scattering five strikeouts, four hits and a walk over seven innings.
Goodwin, who’s now 6-0 with 39 strikeouts, finished the week with 21 2/3 innings. She gave up just two earned runs.
Goodwin and Williamson are the first UAB pair to sweep C-USA’s top weekly softball prizes since 2013.
Williamson rounded out the week with a .533 batting average, two home runs, a pair of doubles and eight RBIs. Her two-out, two run double in the seventh inning against Mississippi State sent the game to extras. Her two-out double in the sixth against Minnesota drove in the only run of the game.
Minnesota is the highest-ranked foe UAB has beaten so far this year.
The Blazers take an eight-game win streak and 14-5 record into Tuesday’s home doubleheader versus Lipscomb. They’ll open C-USA play Saturday against North Texas.
